Before and after the planned interventions

At MZ Studio, we believe that design transforms spaces, creating ambiances that inspire and support. Our latest project, the adaptation of a commercial space into a fitness studio for our client Nepo Pilates Studio, is a perfect example of how a thoughtful approach, even with limited interventions in a rented space, can yield exceptional results.

The initial challenge of adapting a rented space was clear: how to achieve a maximum effect with minimal, completely reversible interventions, while simultaneously creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment? We focused on key elements. The existing brick wall received a completely new look and color, instantly refreshing the space and giving it a distinct character. The cold, uninviting floor was replaced with a special LVT flooring, highly durable, comfortable underfoot, and, of course, aesthetically appealing, perfectly suited for the needs of a fitness studio. These two seemingly simple interventions formed the foundation for creating a warm and inspiring workout space.

The heart of the design lies in a carefully selected palette of colors and materials, inspired by the warm Mediterranean atmosphere the owner wished to convey. We opted for terracotta colour on the walls, whose earthy hue brings a sense of grounding and peace, evoking sun-drenched landscapes. In contrast, we chose light wood for the flooring, equipment, and built-in furniture. Its natural texture and light color contribute to airiness and visually expand the space, enhancing the feeling of warmth that terracotta already provides. The combination of terracotta and light wood creates harmony and balance, essential for a place dedicated to well-being.

To ensure maximum functionality, we devised several specific solutions. Firstly, we designed mirrors on wheels that can be easily moved around the space. This flexibility allows for quick reconfigurations of the studio for individual lessons, group training sessions, or workshops, and efficient use of space when mirrors are not needed in a particular zone.

To provide order and better organization in the exercise space, an existing wall niche was utilized to store smaller exercise equipment. A specially designed shelf with holders for rings and a rope for stability balls successfully accommodated all props, contributing to tidiness and accessibility.

The changing room, as an important part of any fitness space, was designed as a harmonious extension of the main studio. Interior elements such as the LVT flooring and the terracotta-colored brick wall are repeated, creating a cohesive ambiance. An existing mirror was retained, highlighted with thoughtful lighting, and complemented by elegant cabinets and a round stool for both functionality and comfort.

Finally, the existing lighting in the space was maintained but enhanced with spotlight-type fixtures to provide sufficient illumination for all activities. Near the entrance, a shallow reception desk discreetly completes the functionality of the workout space, serving as a central point for welcoming clients and providing information.

Through these thoughtful interventions, we created a Pilates studio that is not only aesthetically appealing and warm but also highly practical and adaptable to the needs of modern exercise. At MZ Studio, we believe that every space has the potential to become an inspiring environment, and this project is a clear testament to that.
